DRAGONS AGE VIDEO GAME (REVIEW)

Photobucket

When was the last time you felt totally lost in a fantasy gameworld? When was the last time you played a game with such a well-crafted and enjoyable story that you knew you’d remember it for a long, long time? Dragon Age: Origins is that kind of game, so rich and involving that you are powerless to resist its wiles and whims, so touching and triumphant that your mind and heart will be moved. In the fictional land of Ferelden, you meet memorable characters and fight for a cause you believe in, and it's this backdrop that makes developer BioWare's newest role-playing game so extraordinary. Dragon Age is more than a well-crafted story, however: It's a lengthy, intricate, and thoroughly entertaining adventure that's easy to fall in love with.

Showing arachnids who's really the boss.

Dragon Age's plot, which deals with the impending invasion of a horde of demonic creatures called the darkspawn, isn't where the story's biggest surprises lie. The shocks, the joys, and the disappointments spring from the repartee among a number of remarkable characters; they lurk within books of lore and stories of martyrs; and they burst forth during spine-tingling moments when you must choose from a selection of difficult choices that affect the tale's direction--and the way your associates interact with you. Ferelden is a colorful and fascinating kingdom that takes enough cues from well-known fantasy tropes to be familiar, but bends enough conventions to feel original. Dragon Age features dwarves, but their caste-based society and the social paragons that rise above it twist the norms enough to keep you intrigued. Mages remain under the constant watch of templars, a restriction that doesn't sit well with those who view such policing as virtual slavery. The role of religion in human circles is of particular note. Chantries provide refuge to those worshiping the all-powerful Maker, and chanters recite the holy word near their houses of prayer. But lest this world sound too serious, don't despair: One such disciple slides food references into her chant, and a few dwarves warn you not to fall into the sky. Small, humorous touches like this are plentiful. Even if you aren't the literary sort, Dragon Age may inspire you to read every note, every character bio, and every creature description, thanks to the richness of the world and the consistency with which it's presented.

You'll learn even more from the companions who join you, and you'll grow to care about them on your quest for glory. There's Morrigan, the cynical apostate mage bound to your cause for reasons that become clear only late in the journey; Sten, the strong, silent type who isn't so quick to reveal his innermost thoughts; and Zevran, a darkly mischievous would-be assassin with a wild streak and a playful disregard for the law. There are others too, including Alistair, a wisecracking, vaguely insecure member of the Grey Wardens, an elite group of champions that recruits you early on. Great dialogue and fantastic voice acting make these characters leap off the screen as if they were real friends, and the way they interact with one another feels authentic. Morrigan and Alistair banter about the role of templars in the lives of mages, and the sweetly devout Leliana tries to communicate with your trusty canine cohort in some amusing exchanges. You may even develop a romance (or two) before all is said and done. The course of love isn't always a smooth one, though it can be a bit steamy, in a PG-13 sort of way.

Uh oh--this can't be healthy.

Relationships must be nurtured; in the world of Dragon Age, love doesn't develop at first sight. Rather, you must improve your standings with available party members by giving them gifts and fulfilling quests in ways that please them. Doing so opens more dialogue options and may even reward you with unexpected gifts beyond the private pleasures of your tent. Your personal relationships aren't all you need to worry about when facing a difficult decision, however. On significant quests, you'll encounter complex choices that force you to weigh the risks against the rewards, even as you try to stay true to your own vision of your character. Are werewolves heartless killers, or is there a method to their madness? Should you wholeheartedly embrace a political candidate, or will some unexpected information have you playing double agent--or just killing the opposition? Such open-ended quests have become staples in many similar RPGs, but few make these decisions feel so momentous. The anxiety that results when you encounter important choices is a result of superb writing and character development: When you care about your destiny, decisions have more weight.

Even Dragon Age's initial moments present important decisions that affect how your adventure plays out. You'll customize your own avatar's look from a variety of presets, but more importantly, you'll choose a race and class. The choices may seem initially limited, but your options eventually expand. Later, you can choose up to two subclasses once you reach the necessary level requirements, and there are a few different means of unlocking additional skill trees. Your initial race and class choices don't just determine the kinds of skills and spells you will have access to, however; they influence how the first few hours of the game progress. You will experience one of six different "origin stories" that follow the events that lead you to the elite Grey Wardens. Every origin story leads to the same place, but that doesn't mean you leave these events behind for good. Characters you met early on will cross your path again, and crucial moments of your origin story will continue to haunt you. The varied origin stories not only provide plenty of replay value, but allow you to see familiar characters from a different angle. A prisoner you meet within a dank dungeon may not have much impact on you if you are playing as a Dalish elf, but if you play as a human mage, this encounter is a bittersweet reunion.

Meet Morrigan. Sharp tongue not pictured.

You aren't a lone adventurer, however. You can take up to three companions along with you, and eventually you will meet more willing (or unwilling, as the case may be) darkspawn slayers. You can switch out party members back at your camp or in other friendly areas. Party members you don't use will remain at camp, though they thankfully level up even when you don't take them along. Your comrades aren't just AI-controlled henchmen; you can take full control of any party member at any time, though how you do so depends on the platform. PC owners get the most versatile and rewarding experience in this regard. You can zoom the camera in to a close third-person view when exploring and conversing with non-player characters, or pull the camera back to a tactical view, which makes it a breeze to quickly and easily micromanage every spell and attack, in true Baldur's Gate tradition. On consoles, you always view the action from behind a single character, and you use a shoulder button to switch among them. It's a great way of experiencing the buzz of battle, though occasional pathfinding quirks are more apparent in the console versions, simply because you experience the action from a single perspective at a time, rather than while managing four characters simultaneously.

If you've played a BioWare fantasy RPG in the past, you'll feel right at home with the combat system. By clicking on your target or pressing the attack button, you don't just swing a sword, but you approach your target and queue up your attack. Once your party has gained access to a good number of spells, stances, and skills, battlefields explode with bright colors and raucous sound effects, and it's a lot of fun to switch back and forth between party members, managing your abilities and taking advantage of various spell combos to wreak havoc. There are dozens of different types of enemies to slice up, from giant spiders and darkspawn, to ghosts and walking trees, to demons and, of course, dragons. Allies will join you in the biggest battles, and the best of these, particularly those toward the end of the game, are thrilling. On the PC, they're particularly challenging, and many battles benefit from frequent pausing and tactical thinking, so that you can queue up attacks across your entire party. The same battles on consoles are noticeably easier.

How to Cook a Turkey

Whether brining, roasting, smoking or deep-frying, you'll be sure to serve a moist and tender bird.

Fresh or Frozen?

* Before you buy the turkey, figure out your guest list. You should have 1 to 1½ pounds of turkey per person.
* Your next decision will be selecting between a frozen or fresh turkey.
* A fresh bird is more expensive, but will save you time and precious refrigerator space. Buy the bird the day before you wish to roast it, but remember to reserve your turkey with the butcher. Most grocers don’t keep a large stock of fresh birds on hand.
* You will need to plan ahead if buying a frozen bird as well: it can be catastrophic to find that the only turkey available for your intimate four-person dinner is a 26-pound glacial beast.
* A frozen turkey needs to be defrosted. The preferred method is to defrost it in the refrigerator. (Yes, the one filled with the rest of the holiday fare.) Allow one day per 5 pounds. A 15-pound turkey will require three days to defrost thoroughly.
* An alternate method is to defrost the bird in a cold water bath. Allow 30 minutes per pound. That 15-pound turkey will require only 7½ hours to defrost using this approach. It is also possible to use a combination of these methods.

* Buying and Thawing a Turkey

How to Brine Your Turkey

Are you thinking about brining your turkey this year? It's a straightforward process but it requires a little planning. Soaking the turkey in a saltwater solution allows the meat to absorb water and flavorings, resulting in a juicy, flavorful turkey.

See Brining Turkey for instructions and recipes.

How to Roast Your Turkey

To prepare the turkey for roasting, first remove the giblets! Not only is it disconcerting to find these paper-wrapped lumps when carving the bird, but you may also wish to use the giblets in your gravy or stuffing. Next, rinse the bird inside and out. Pat dry with paper towels.

* If you are stuffing the bird, stuff it loosely, allowing about ½ to ¾ cup stuffing per pound of turkey.
* Brush the skin with melted butter or oil. Tie drumsticks together with string (for stuffed birds only).
* Lastly, insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh. The thermometer should point towards the body, and should not touch the bone.
* Place the bird on a rack in a roasting pan, and into a preheated 350 degree F (175 degrees C) oven. Use the following chart to estimate the time required for baking.
* Bake until the skin is a light golden color, and then cover loosely with a foil tent. During the last 45 minutes of baking, remove the foil tent to brown the skin. Basting is not necessary, but helps promote even browning.

* Cook beans until tender. Stir in almonds and crumbled bacon and cook until heated through.

Finishing Touches:

* Transfer gravy, rolls and green beans into serving bowls.
* Carve the turkey and arrange meat on a warmed platter.

Game Plan for Advanced Menu

One to Two Weeks Before:

* Make a shopping list; beat the holiday rush
* Make dinner rolls; proof for twenty minutes, then freeze. When firm, transfer rolls to plastic freezer bag.
* Make pastry for pecan pie (use recipe of your choice). Chill dough, then roll out and line a nine-inch pie shell. Freeze until firm. Wrap frozen dough and pan with plastic wrap and store in the freezer.

Three Days Before:

* Thaw turkey in refrigerator
* Prepare and bake cheesecake crust; cool and wrap with plastic wrap. Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place.

Two Days Before:

* Make chutney
* Cube bread for stuffing: use a mix of multigrain, rye, and country white bread for Old-Fashioned Stuffing, or make pumpkin bread for Ibby's Pumpkin-Mushroom Stuffing
* Bake pie shell (see Perfect Pie Crusts for instructions on blind baking). Cool and wrap with plastic wrap. Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place.

Day Before:

* Remove giblets and neck from turkey cavity
* Brine turkey
* Make stock out of turkey neck and giblets (do not use the liver for making stock, as it can make broth bitter), celery, onion, carrot and aromatics
* Bake cheesecake
* Bake pecan pie
* Prep veggies for roasting
* Toast pine nuts and cook bacon for Brussels Sprouts; store in refrigerator
* Make stuffing

Night Before:

* If you have room in the fridge, arrange frozen dinner rolls on sheet pan and thaw overnight in the refrigerator. (Otherwise, thaw at room temperature on Thanksgiving morning.)
* Set the dining room table. Include serving dishes for gravy, dinner rolls, butter, and side dishes, plus serving utensils.

Thanksgiving Morning:

* Brush dinner rolls with egg wash
* Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake rolls and stuffing.
* Light coals; prep grill
* Increase oven temperature to 425 degrees F and roast vegetables
* Grill turkey

One hour before dinner:

* Make mashed potatoes. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and rest bowl over pan of simmering water to keep warm.

Half an hour before dinner:

* Collect drippings from roasting pan under turkey. Make gravy.
* Prepare Brussels sprouts
* Keep stuffing and roasted vegetables warm in a 300 degree F oven.
* Wrap rolls in foil and warm in oven, if desired

Tragedy as balloon boy vanishes in Colorado

Photobucket

By Keith Coffman
From: Reuters
October 15, 2009 6:48AM

A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy has vanished in extraordinary and heartbreaking circumstances after he climbed into a home-made helium balloon at his family home and flew away.

The balloon landed about 6.40am Australian time in Colorado in the United States after a frantic rescue effort by emergency authorities - but tragically there was no sign of the little boy.

Emergency workers are now clinging to faint hope that the boy somehow managed to escape the balloon early in its flight and could be alive. Worst fears are that he either jumped or fell during its two-hour flight.

When the balloon hit the ground, rescue workers surrounded it quickly to secure it - but then made the discovery they dreaded most: the boy was not inside.

Television images showed the silver balloon, resembling a flying saucer and about six meters across, floating across the Colorado skies at an estimated 1800 meters, moving at an estimated 50km an hour.

CNN reported that the US. National Guard had scrambled helicopters to monitor the balloon's progress but authorities struggled to work out how to safely land the contraption before it hit the ground.

A Larimer County Sheriff's spokeswoman said that the boy had climbed into the balloon, which she described as "a homemade helium balloon made to look like a UFO" at his family's home in Fort Collins.

The craft then apparently broke away from a pair of tethers holding it to the ground and floated away.

Aviation experts said that the boy could survive the flight but would be cold and possibly disoriented at high altitudes.

Television channels showed live images of the balloon zipping over countryside, twisting around as it moved.

Local police said the boy, Falcon Heene and his father, Richard Heene, were working on the craft in the family's backyard when the boy was believed to have climbed into a plywood enclosed structure beneath the balloon.

The father said the craft was hovering above the ground, but slipped its rope tethers.

The Huffington Post reported that the boy is the son of Richard and Mayumi Heene of Fort. Collins, Colorado.

“Richard is a storm chaser and scientist. The parents were on "Wife Swap" and returned for the 100th episode, so information on the family is online. They apparently sleep in their clothes so they can leap from bed and run after a storm,” the Huffington Post reported. “Falcon has two older brothers, Bradford and Ryo.”

Another website, tv.com, said the family were known risk-takers. The LA Times reported: "The Heene family, with its three rowdy boys, is anchored by father Richard, whose anger arrives in sudden bolts between his fringe science projects."

The US ABC site said the Heene family were science obsessedThe ABC site says the family is "science-obsessed" and the Huffington Post said ABC wrote the following for their second TV appearance:

“When the Heene family aren't chasing storms, they devote their time to scientific experiments that include looking for extraterrestrials and building a research-gathering flying saucer to send into the eye of the storm.

“In this ultimate swap, the Heenes swap lives with a psychic mom who speaks to the dead and can control the weather, her husband and her children -- who believe they are destined to be stars.

“This show will feature aliens, punk rockers, past-life regression and, for the first time ever, the children from the two families will face off in a kids' table meeting. "Heene/Silver," the 100th episode of Wife Swap, destined to become a classic!”

The Wife Swop TV show website describes the family as such: “The Heene family from Colorado live life on the edge. Wife Mayumi (43) and storm scientist Richard (45) take their three kids, Bradford (8), Ryo (7) and Falcon (5), out of school to go on storm chasing missions to prove Richard's theories about magnetic fields and gravity.

“If conditions are right, Mayumi wakes her family by shouting "Storm Approaching, Storm Approaching!" into a bullhorn. The family sleep in their clothes so they can leap out of bed and into the storm-mobile.

“Richard calls Mayumi his 'ninja wife'; she maintains equipment, drives the storm-mobile, films tornadoes and waits with the kids while Richard jumps on his motorbike, heads into the eye of the storm and launches rockets to measure magnetic forces.

“At home the family are as chaotic as a twister: the kids have no table manners and throw themselves around the house, and while Richard devotes every moment to his research, he expects Mayumi to cook, clean and run the house without any help.

“Meanwhile on a quiet street in Connecticut, the Martel family -- wife Karen (43), husband Jay (50) and their two kids, Max (11) and Dean (10) -- live a life of calm and safety.
“Dad is so committed to safety that he runs a child-proofing business devoted to identifying dangers and risks and making sure kids stay out of harm's way.

“With all the precautions taken to keep them safe, Max and Dean seem to be afraid of everything..."you can fall down the stairs, get cancer from the microwave, get tapeworms from sushi, and the lava lamp could explode..."

“The Martels conduct safety fire drills, make sure the kids wear protective gear on their bikes and pogo-sticks and never let the boys out of their sight. The atmosphere in the house is calm and serene, and Karen and Jay are equal partners.”

A First look at Canon's PowerShot G11

The Same 10Mp Sensor in Two Distinct Flavors
Text & Photos by Allan Weitz

Canon PowerShot G11

Ever since the introduction of the original 3.3Mp PowerShot G1 way back in the year 2000, most every succeeding G-series digicam has boasted an ever-increasing pixel count. The G10 capped them all at 14.7Mp. With the introduction of the Canon PowerShot G11, Canon's engineers have taken a step backwards in a sense by turning to a new 10Mp imaging sensor, which contains about a third fewer – albeit larger - pixels than its predecessor, the G10. So the $64 question is- 'How does this drastic dose of pixel-shrinkage affect image quality?' The answer is 'quite well, and thank you for asking'.

It's no big secret the higher-resolution sensors found in many digicams fall short of their lower-res siblings and predecessors. You can subdivide an imaging sensor just so far before the benefits of higher pixel-counts start compromising the dynamic range of the image in the form of blown highlights, murky shadows, and blotchy tonal transitions. Based on comparisons between a G10 and an early production model of the G11, Canon's engineers seem to have taken a good change of course.

As for overall image quality, the image files produced by our test G11 were equal to - and in some circumstances better than - image files produce by the G10. This is noteworthy considering the files produced by the G11 are considerably smaller (about 28.6Mb) compared to the files produced by the G10 (about 41.8Mb). (So much for the more-is-better school of thought… eh Kemosabe?)

The G11 strongly resembles its predecessor, the G10, and thankfully retains the G10's 'real camera' analog control dials for switching exposure modes, ISO sensitivity, and exposure compensation. The biggest exterior difference is the G11's 2.7", 461,000-dot swivel-mounted LCD. If you've used a swivel-LCD in the past, you'd note its absence when trying to shoot from difficult angles with the G10. Not so with the G11. The cost of this convenience is about 9/10th of a millimeter of additional padding on the camera's profile, but such is life. The swivel feature also allows you to face the LCD inward to protect the LCD surface when it's not in use.

Like the G10, the G11 sports an honest-to-gosh optical viewfinder which, peephole-ish as it may be, is a welcome alternative to the camera's LCD when shooting under brighter lighting conditions.

The lens, the same 6.1~30.5/f2.8-4.5 5x (28~140mm equivalent) zoom lens used on the G10, does a fine job capturing sharp stills (JPEG and/or RAW) and video despite a bit of pin-cushion distortion common to most zoom lenses in this genre of cameras, most noticeably at the wide end of the zoom range.

One of the niceties of the G-series PowerShot cameras has been the hot-shoe, which enables the use of all of Canon's Speedlite flashes and compatible third-party flashes. The hot-shoe also facilitates the use of optical and radio transmitters for triggering studio strobes. And if you plan on using the G11 in studio environments, you'll be pleased to know the G11 has a top flash sync of 1/2000th compared to the G10's already-fast top sync speed of 1/500th.

Other improvements found in the G11 include an HDMI output port for playing back still and video on your TV or computer monitor, higher low-light sensitivity, and a Dual Anti-Noise System, that along with the G11's DIGIC 4 image processor, allows for noticeably better low-light imaging at ISO levels up to 3200 (ditto for the PowerShot S90). While image files from most cameras in the point-and-shoot arena start falling apart once you get to around ISO 400 (regardless of manufacturer's claims), the images produced by both the G11 and S90 in the ISO 400-800 range proved to be impressive with reasonable noise levels, and even at 1600 and 3200, both the G11 and S90 produced very usable image files.
